Puma Velocity Nitro 2 Introduction
In the past couple of years, Puma has made a strong comeback in the world of distance running. Their impressive lineup of top athletes and a complete revamp of their distance running shoes demonstrate their commitment to the sport. Now, in its second iteration, we have the Velocity Nitro 2.
The updates in this version include some minor adjustments to the upper and midsole. While I didn’t personally try the first edition, comparing the two doesn’t reveal many noticeable changes. One of the most significant alterations is the increase in the heel-to-toe drop, going from 8mm to 10mm.
Within Puma’s range of running shoes, the Velocity Nitro 2 stands out as a versatile option that aims to provide an all-around performance.
Out of Puma’s lineup, this is probably the most middle of the road shoe that seeks to provide an all around package.
Puma Velocity Nitro 2 First Impressions
As soon as I took these shoes out of the box, I was intrigued. They felt lightweight when I held them, and the midsole had a soft and comfortable texture. While I personally preferred the black and white color combination, it was nice to see that there were more vibrant color options available as well.
Slipping my feet into these shoes for the first time was a pleasant experience. They provided an incredibly comfortable fit, and I had ample room to move my feet around. I decided to start with an easy 6-mile run, and the time flew by without any discomfort.
Puma Velocity Nitro 2 Upper
The upper of the shoe is made from engineered mesh and features reflective accents. I found the extra reflective elements particularly useful since I often run at night.
The material of the upper is quite comfortable, although I wish it provided better breathability. As temperatures rose, I noticed the shoes feeling hot, and my sweat would sometimes make them feel heavier. Additionally, the mesh took longer than expected to dry out after getting wet. Unlike many of my other running shoes that usually dry out overnight, these took nearly twice as long.
The heel of the shoe is fairly soft, yet it hugged my foot securely. I never experienced any slipping, and it provided a snug and locked-in fit that I appreciated.
Speaking of the lacing, the tongue is connected to the upper from the middle of the foot down to the toe area. This design prevents any problems with the tongue rolling inward or causing discomfort. However, I did find the laces to be quite long, even when using a runner’s loop to secure them. I frequently had to double-check that they were tied tightly and had to stop several times during my runs to re-tie them.
Fit wise, these were true to size. I had plenty of room to move around in the toe box and I had no issues with the width of the shoe. I do not see a need to size up or out.
Puma Velocity Nitro 2 Sole Unit
The outsole boasts a pattern named Pumagrip, which delivers remarkable traction and control for a road shoe. Even during my longest run on a rainy rail trail, I never encountered slipping issues. The traction rivals that of any road-to-trail shoe I’ve worn.
The midsole features a dual-layer of responsive and lightweight foam known as Nitro Foam. The lower layer offers solid firmness, while the upper layer is indulgently cushioned and soft. To provide additional structure, a TPU plate is integrated into the heel.
The blend of firm and soft foam layers results in a ride that’s both comfortable and responsive. The firmness effectively absorbs impact shocks, while the softer foam aids in smooth takeoffs. The heel plate adds stability and safeguards against ankle rolling, allowing for enhanced control.
With a 10mm offset, my landings and takeoffs mostly centered around my mid-foot region.
Puma Velocity Nitro 2 Conclusions
I hadn’t reviewed a pair of Pumas in a while, especially since they made a comeback in the distance running scene. Their recent focus on running intrigued me, and I was excited to see what they had in store.
I received these shoes towards the end of dealing with a hip injury. I was a bit cautious initially, but they exceeded my expectations.
The shoes felt comfortable when I needed them to be, without making me feel like I was straining. As my body recovered, I was able to pick up the pace and embark on longer runs effortlessly. The balance between firmness and cushioning contributed to a delightful running experience.
Considering the quality, these shoes could easily be priced higher at $150-$160. I’m glad Puma has kept them affordable. With the tech they offer, it’s clear they’re Puma’s response to the Nike Pegasus.
Living in Maryland, I face high humidity and dewpoints for half the year, so I hope Puma addresses the upper issues in future versions. Aside from that, these shoes are pretty much perfect.
